Hi Bro!.The group SMERSH was formed in 1998 in Stalingrad. In 2000 " About life "demo is written, this work was executed in the spirit of grind core of the first wave with aggressive social lyrics in Russian and English languages :. In 2003 "VAGINA OF CAPITALISM " is created.Later it was issured like a split on MORE HATE in autumn of 2004. During the autumn of the same year completion of " IN GUN WE TRUST " is completed, in comparison with the previous works this material is more rigid and uncompromising. SMERSH supports various displays of nonconformism and opposition to ñapitalist system. All the instruments, used by group, are executed by musicians except for a technical part. We do not use paid resources and services of the commercial promoters, we do not work with big commercial labels, we do not count ourselves as a part of the musical market. I think this information is enough for drawing up of representation of group SMERSH. And the name are first letters of two different words « Death to Spies », thought up by Stalin to name a department of countrespionage which was engaged in revealing of traitors of the native land and their punishment. I've got your promo cd-r " Vagina Of Capitalism" and I was surprised by how much I got into it, considering it just not a stagnate Grindcore but a good grindwork. So who write the sonx and lyrics?
Yes, we play old kind grind!!! The author of lyrics - me,but in creation of that madness you call music all members of the gang take part, I only create the basic rhythmic figure. How is the Grind scene in Russia at the moments? It's the scenester really into Grindcore or still addicted with any pop music such as Tato? Many places to put on gigs and people to support them?
'TATO' is a full SHIT!!!! I'd fuck them !!!! And the extreme stage is in decline, as against hard core and other commercial dung. There's not enough platforms for performances, and a level of performance of some grind gangs is very low, this is why our stage is totally rotten. Yes, there are people which support grind and SMERSH, buy disks, come on concerts, this is really great!!! I think each year there will be more of them … SMERSH is a three-piece grindhead, with you in guitar and vocal position. So isn't hard to play and sang during live show? What your main influence as well as the band?
Fuck! Devilishly difficult, it is necessary to stand motionlessly at the microphonic rack, at that time when all gang rages and SLAMS …. I cope both with a guitar and with a microphone, but sometimes simply I sing, as the free vocalist. And in general I'm the one in the gang who is engaged in administrative work. Vagina Of Capitalism is appear with a strange obscene cover artwork ( a doggy style of girl and dog making sex J ) Are this about a porn Grindcore or it has a symbolic meaning towards the artwork? What about a censorship?
This picture shows a degree of depravity of a modern society where it is possible to buy all for money … Money - shit!!!! And censorship...grind is a music of rebellion ang let the censorship go to ASS!!!! Some SMERSH titles are sarcastic, some more in a direct "protest" vein' though your band isn't the typical "militant" one. What do you think bands with an "ortodox politically correct" attitude?
I really like them!!! As I have already told before, grind is music of revolt! Therefore treat the band neutral (if their music is good), negative (if their music is bad). We know that the Gods Of Grindcore, Napalm Death was touring there in Russia in Februari 2005. Are you going to the show? Do you think that Napalm Death was giving a big impact to Russian Grind scene since their first Russian tour in 1992?
If all will develop successfully we shall act with them on one stage, that'll be cool!!!!!!! From the moment of their arrival much has changed, the concept of a stage of 1992 was absent. In present time our stage develops also and that's very well. But the role of N.D. in it is so minimal that there is no sense to speak about them. Russia is too big, so just one group can't influence all the stage at once. For me first two albums of NAPALM DEATH forever will stay as the examples of true grind, but no more that. I heard that that an American label, Yousns Recording responsible to release/re-release two of your Cd, please name it. What is the aim or reason to choose this US label?
It is more promoaction for the American student, disks releaze in a format cd-r. The reasons of a choice - Matt Edwards, the guy, who values the reputation, label is young and consequently it is interested in promotion of the mark in UG, advancing itself, it will be engaged in promotion for SMERSH also. On Yousns Recording we has already releazed EP " In This Place, Must be your Face " and will releaze new demo “ In Gun We Trust ” in a format 3-way split. And also a number of works of my foreign projects (like E.E.H.). What are your releases and more importantly what releases have you got to planned for the future?
We released: SMERSH EP " In This Place, Must be your Face " only in D.I.Y. CD - R format, 4-way split CD of russian death/grind bands:BARBARITY/KATALEPSY/SMERSH/POSTHU MOUS BLASPHEMER. In plans thre's a release of a new demo on (American Line prod.) and split with PERPETUAL on malasian label COMBAT records. What do you guys do other than play and grind in SMERSH? Do any of you have jobs?
All of us work (I temporarily do not work), we are engaged in sports, we beat muzzles of those, who prevent us to live how we want.I am an economist. Other musicians: drummer - the professional jazz musician, and bassguitar - works as the bouncer in one of bars. Are you familiar with Asian Grind scene/bands? Don't you guys have a plan touring Asia? Which country the most do SMERSH to visit?
Yes,a little, all gangs that I've heared, play simply magnificent grind!!!! They are: DEMISOR, UNHOLY GRAVE, BUTCHER ABC, 324. Tours on Asia? That would be great, but with our modest incomes it is not possible, though... who knows????? Ukraine and the countries of the East Europe. A lot of people might think that it would take some kind of "narcotic" influence to create an extreme music like this. Do you guys take any drugs or what?
In the past I have tried much in life, now I understand that it destroys me. I have voluntary refused alcohol, nicotine, not speaking about drugs. All members of my gang support this. It is necessary to think of the future.
And the grind music in general is incompatible to alcohol and drugs, and those, who think differently... let them try to play a concert drunk, I think a horse-radish he will play… Common question of the issue - what do think the recent situation in your country and the following chaos situation in eastern-Europe?
In the East Europe all is normal, there is no chaos there… And in a native land,here simply all have got used to be at war and can not live without war any more. It seems like the government needs only soldiers, on all others to spit ….We have many street gangs, but the main gangsters and mongrels sit in the government ….These are the one who need war, unemployment and chaos. I very negatively treat what is happening in my country, but all that I can do is to be myself and to try to open eyes of others, let them see the truth!!! Please promote and name us some potential Grind bands and webzine/zine that you think worthy to know them?
In Russia thre's a little large web zines: (it is a large printed magazine about metal). And groups: BARBARITY, POSTHUMOUS BLASPHEMER, EDUCATED SCUM, but the pure grind plays only SMERSH, all others play more brutal death/grind. Thanx for answering this interview.
